Christopher Gadsden, back in 1775, placed a coiled rattlesnake above a four-word motto that would come to sound deeply and unmistakably American:

The Gadsden flag grew closely linked with America's earliest naval tradition and with the men prepared to fight for a nation that did not yet officially exist.
